"Creatine has probably been studied more than any other supplement. It used to be that only body builders were taking creatine. Creatine is not only good for our muscle strength, power, and endurance; but it actually helps block sarcopenia. Sarcopenia is the loss of muscle that can occur with decreased activity or with aging. There is a study which evaluated the muscle composition with DEXA scans before and after immobilizing adult human legs with a cast. The creatine group lost less muscle than the control group. Since we all will develop some sarcopenia with age, we should be aware of this benefit. There has also been increasing attention on Creatine's ability to be neuro protective. It is being evaluated for its potential role to reduce dementia. Creatine increases the cellular energy available at the mitochondrial level. This property is believed to be the reason for the neuro protection. It currently is given to patients after concussions to block neurological damage. It has also been found to improve short term memory. Some people are concerned about the water retention that can occur with creatine. However, it is intracellular water, not extracellular. This is good for your muscle and brain cells. With normal to small doses, it is typically not an issue. It is not extracellular fluid like you see in someone who is in poor health. In normal dosages, creatine has been shown to be very safe but please follow the advice of your healthcare provider."
